Power or People?
By Gurpreet Singh Sandhu • Aug 30th, 2008 • Category: OpinionsA minor land issue in Jammu has erupted into a major headache for the residents of Kashmir and the UPA led center government. The violence has already left over fifty people dead and hundreds injured, mostly innocent civilians. We haven’t even counted the indirect problems caused by the curfew and endless protests over the last two months. Most people assume this is over 99 acres of land, it’s not. There is a common saying, “if you want to get to the bottom of a dispute, follow the money.” For conflicts in India the saying has always been, “follow the leaders.”
In this conflict we have four sides the UPA, Hindu protestors, Muslim protestors (some backed by external powers), and the innocent people of Kashmir. No matter what happens the losing sides will be the UPA and the people of Kashmir. Hindu and Muslim leaders will come out as winners. They will have gained more followers for future agitations. Another winner will be the BJP led NDA who will have ruined UPA’s Hindu and Muslim votes, due to this prolonged conflict. This isn’t about accommodations for pilgrims or about keeping Kashmir Muslim controlled, they are just good covers for leaders to fulfill their agendas. These “community leaders” don’t care about anyone, they aren’t Hindu or Muslim. If it would help them, they would become atheists.
When will Indian politics evolve away from these lowly politics that do nothing but cause harm to the common people? Nothing will change until the people of India realize that it isn’t about Hindu or Muslim, it is all about which political leaders have power and which want power.
