Bus fire in Fiji kills 10

SUVA - Firefighters from the National Fire Authority in Sigatoka attended to a bus fire at Naiyevuyevu, Cuvu, Nadroga last night. The firefighters assisted the injured passengers and extinguished the fire but were unable to save the ten people who died during the course of the fire.

NFA Sigatoka received the emergency call at around 2330hrs and upon arrival at the scene the fire crew found the bus fully engulfed in flames.

The Raiwaqa Bus Company 60-seater coach was traveling towards Nadi.

Chief Fire Officer Mark Reid said: “This is a terrible and tragic incident that has had a real impact on our firefighters who attended the scene. NFA would like to offer our heartfelt condolences to all the families affected by this tragic incident.”

“ NFA has sent our most senior and experienced fire investigators to work with the Police to conduct a preliminary investigation as to the cause and spread of fire in this vehicle. NFA will be working closely with the NRSC, LTA and Police on the fire component of this tragic incident.”
