Movie Review – KARZZZZ

By Parampreet Singh Sandhu • Oct 22nd, 2008 • Category: Entertainment

Director: Satish Kaushik

Cast: Himesh Reshammiya, Urmila Matondkar, Danny Denzongpa

Himesh Reshammiya comes back with a bang! If AAP KA SUROOR was any indication then Himesh has truly stepped into the world of acting stardom with KARZZZZ!!! That’s right KARZZZZ (now with four Z’s!) a remake of the Subhash Ghai classic starring Rishi Kapoor! (which was actually a rip off on its own from THE REINCARNATION OF PETER PROUD)

Alright, I lied. Himesh’s attempt in crossing that bridge from a mediocre music director (who steals songs by the way) to a horrendous singer, to a sad excuse for an actor isn’t going anywhere. Unless if Himesh is financing these films himself, there seems to be no reason for anyone to think he’s worthy of any talent.

The story is about our hero Monty (Himesh Reshammiya) an extremely successful Rock Star based in South Africa; he is phenomenally popular and is worshipped like an idol. In course of one of the many parties he attends, he meets Tina (Shweta Kumar). For Monty, its love at first sight. But, Tina returns home immediately, after leaving Monty fretting. That’s when things start to change.

During one of his rehearsals, Monty starts playing a tune and suddenly goes into a trance, with intense visual flashes – a mansion, a temple, a beautiful girl… Monty collapses unconscious.

On further probe, he finds out; the mansion belonged to a certain Ravi Verma (Dino Morea), who died in a tragic accident. Another flash back reveals that Monty was Ravi Verma in his previous life, married to a beautiful girl called Kamini (Urmila Matondkar). Monty now has the grave realization of having been reborn in his current persona. His beautiful love interest (Tina) is none other than Kamini’s foster daughter. From here starts Monty’s new journey.

A journey of enthralling vengeance, which he unleashes on Kamini. In close connivance with her wicked accomplice Sir Juda (Gulshan Grover), Kamini had murdered Ravi to take over his estate, leaving his family helpless after his death.

To repay the debt he owed them for all their suffering, Monty now brings his mother and sister out from the dark recesses of their life; he also reunites with Tina and culminates his incomplete love from a previous life.

Sounds like a great story doesn’t it? Where could they possibly go wrong with a formula like this one?
The only bright part was watching Danny Denzongpa. His performances of late have been far and few but with some upcoming releases we’ll be treated to one of the most underrated actors from the pervious generation.

As for all the other actors besides our numero uno (Himesh), they were wasted. Raj Babbar has a few scenes in the beginning then fades away and decides to come back during the climatic fight. Gulshan Grover has played some ridiculous villains in the past but Sir Juda is definitely amongst the top 5. He communicates through an electric arm cast that makes noise. It’s Stephen Hawking remixed with Robocop! Urmila is like her pre-RGV split self, better than her recent performances, but nothing to talk about.

Himesh’s “incredible” acting was awkward and dull (and that’s being polite). How does Himesh Reshammiya in any way come off as being an international pop sensation? Especially when he fails to hook up his electric guitar to an amplifier! Watch out Jay Sean!

For those who may have overlooked this “minor” detail, Monty uses an electric guitar in a couple of his songs…but they’re not hooked up to anything (isn’t Himesh a music composer or something along those lines). Maybe it was a magical guitar from his previous life (where’s RGV when you need him)!

Dino Morea was the biggest loser out of this cast, what type of sins did Dino commit to be reborn as Himesh Reshammiya (ouch!)?

It’s painful to say, but Satish Kaushik’s latest venture fails on every element, poor editing, poor character development and poor hairstyling. Himesh’s next is titled MUDH MUDH KE NA DEKH MUDH MUDH KE (apparently he has short term memory loss so he needs to repeat everything) releasing sometime next year, can’t wait!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars
(1 star, only because Danny Denzongpa is in it.)
